Singapore’s latest General Election has delivered a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s leadership. In his first time leading the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) through the polls, the party won decisively—securing 65.57% of the vote and 87 out of 97 seats in Parliament.

A Stronger Mandate for the PAP

This result marks a notable upswing from the last election, reflecting growing public confidence in PM Wong. With a 4.34 percentage-point gain, it’s a standout performance—especially since previous new prime ministers had seen their party’s vote share dip in their first outing.

Opposition Keeps Its Foothold

The Workers’ Party (WP) held on to its 10 seats, keeping control of Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC, and Sengkang GRC. However, they didn’t make further gains, and their overall vote share dipped slightly. The Progress Singapore Party (PSP), which had NCMPs in the last Parliament, struggled this time, winning just 36.25% of votes in the constituencies it contested.

Tight Races and Big Wins

Some races went down to the wire—Tampines GRC saw a closely fought four-way contest, with PAP narrowly retaining it at 52.02%. On the other hand, Tanjong Pagar GRC delivered a major win for PAP, giving them over 81% of the vote—the party’s highest ever in a group representation constituency. PM Wong’s own team performed strongly in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, increasing its vote share by over 10 percentage points from the last election.

Turnout and Representation

Voter turnout stood at 92.47%, the lowest ever in Singapore’s electoral history, but still high by global standards. Two Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) seats will likely be filled by Workers’ Party candidates who narrowly missed out in close contests.

Public Endorsement of Steady Leadership

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised the results as a reflection of Singapore’s continued political trust and unity—especially significant in a time of global uncertainty. He emphasized the importance of respectful, constructive debate in Parliament, and collaboration across political lines.

Looking Ahead

With this strong mandate, PM Wong and the PAP are well-positioned to lead Singapore through the next phase of its development. For voters, the message was clear: in challenging times, steady leadership still matters most.
