United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has opened a new semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Singapore, marking a US$5 billion investment to boost production capacity. The plant, set to begin operations in 2026, will raise UMC’s wafer output to over one million annually, up from 678,000 in 2024.

Economic Growth and Job Opportunities
The facility will generate 700 new local jobs, including positions in engineering and R&D. UMC currently employs more than 1,800 staff in Singapore, primarily locals.
Cutting-Edge Design and Sustainability
Covering 111,800 square meters, the facility will feature advanced cleanroom spaces, solar panels, and a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It will focus on producing 22 and 28-nanometer chips for high-tech industries like smartphones, data centers, and automotive.
Strengthening Singapore's Semiconductor Sector
This expansion will enhance UMC’s R&D efforts and support Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem, benefiting local startups, suppliers, and universities. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong highlighted its role in driving innovation and talent development.
With these significant investments, Singapore is reinforcing its status as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
