European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently addressed the evolving dynamics of Europe’s international relationships, particularly with the United States and China. Despite shifting geopolitical landscapes, she emphasized that there’s no need to de-risk the EU’s relationship with the US, noting that it differs greatly from the EU's ties with China.

Strengthening Europe’s Defence Posture
Von der Leyen highlighted that recent US decisions, like suspending aid to Ukraine, have served as a wake-up call for Europe to enhance its defence capabilities. In response, the European Commission plans to hold regular security meetings to assess various threats and is pushing for a defence investment proposal worth up to 800 billion euros, including EU loans for member states.
Divisions Within the EU on Ukraine
However, not all EU members are aligned. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has opposed boosting Ukraine’s military support, complicating the bloc's strategy. These internal disagreements add complexity to the EU’s defence plans.
Rethinking the Long-Term Budget
Von der Leyen noted that the EU will likely need to rethink its long-term budget proposal, which is expected in mid-summer. This will reflect new security priorities driven by shifts in US foreign policy and concerns about NATO and Ukraine’s future.
Maintaining Communication with Trump
Despite challenges in engaging with the Trump administration, Von der Leyen expressed willingness to meet with the former president when the timing is right, ensuring that the EU remains open to constructive dialogue.
Von der Leyen's comments underscore the EU’s determination to strengthen its defense and maintain strong ties with the US, despite geopolitical challenges and internal divisions.
